Loretta Park mixes traditional methods of weaving with playful flourishes of everyday items, like balloons, chandelier crystals, and multicolored chain links. Materials that are recognizable and easily accessible to most people are a cornerstone of Park’s practice. She reimagines their function, or renders them useless, thus opening new possibilities for objects and their meanings. While utilizing a loom for weaving is a recent addition to her practice, the artist has always been interested in and pulled inspiration from the language of weaving. Incorporating a range of mediums and tactile materials—from slick plastic to fuzzy fibers—Park’s pieces assemble landscapes that spark curiosity and joyful familiarity.
