Un-monument

Boston Art Review is proud to partner with the Mayor’s Office of Arts and Culture on Un-monument | Re-monument | De-monument, a city-wide initiative that reimagines how we mark memory, place, and civic identity. Un-monument invites artists, curators, and communities to challenge traditional monument production and propose new forms of public commemoration.

As editorial partner, Boston Art Review is commissioning and publishing written works that document, interpret, and amplify the initiative’s reach. We invite you to explore these texts as they unfold—each one offers a lens into the city’s transformation, and the people imagining what comes next.

Seeking writers, artists, researchers, poets, journalists, storytellers, and community voices. BRAR Help shape the public conversation around memory, monuments, and civic space in Boston.

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS

To kick off Un-monument’s second year, Boston Art Review is inviting writers, artists, researchers, poets, journalists, storytellers, and community members to help shape the public conversation around memory, monuments, and civic space in Boston.

BAR has opened two submission portals to gather pitches, ideas, and feedback on the ways we conceive of and respond to monuments, memorials, and commemorative acts—both within and beyond Boston’s evolving cultural landscape. Whether you’re a writer or creative looking to expand on a big idea or a community member hoping to offer a short reflection, we want to hear from you.

We are currently accepting pitches for a series of written and visual works that will contribute to the storytelling, discourse, and critical inquiry surrounding the Un-monument initiative. We invite proposals that engage questions of memory, place, belonging, power, and public commemoration through a wide range of narrative, journalistic, creative, and critical forms.

Submission deadline is July 6, 2026. Early submissions are encouraged; pitches will be considered as they are received.
